Looking forward to Royal Ascot

15 June 2015

TWELVE months ago The Fugue gave us a wonderful day when winning the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes on the Wednesday of Royal Ascot.

She was simply sensational that day, coming from the rear to ease past the likes of Treve, Mukhadram and Magician to win in a course record time.

This year, on the same day, Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber’s colours will be carried by Jellicle Ball in the Listed Sandringham Handicap.

The daughter of Invincible Spirit, who is trained by John Gosden and will be ridden by Ryan Moore, goes into the race on the back of a solid third behind Oaks third Lady of Dubai in the Height Of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood.

She drops back in trip to a mile and looks to have a solid chance on paper.

In the same race, Watership Down Stud-bred Sulaalaat goes for Sheikh Hamdan, Brian Meehan and Paul Hanagan.

The daughter of New Approach was sold for 180,000gns as a yearling and had useful form as a two-year-old most notably when fifth in the Lowther Stakes at York.

Later in the week Watership Down Stud will be represented by Master Apprentice in the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes.

The son of Mastercraftsman was last seen winning the Group 3 Sandown Classic Trial at Sandown in April.

Joyful Hope finishes second in Italian Oaks

01 June 2015

Joyful Hope, daughter of Watership Down Stud mare Claba Di San Jore, finished second in the Group 2 Italian Oaks in Milan yesterday.

A daughter of Shamardal, Joyful Hope is trained by Stefano Botti and was ridden by Dario Vargiu.

During the early stages of the contest, Joyful Hope tracked the pace set by Reset In Blue. She moved up to tackle for the lead with three furlongs to run before striking the front at the furlong marker.

She ran on gamely only to be collared late on by the eventual winner Lovelyn. She went down by just a short head and was joined for a share of second on the line by Full of Beauty.

Claba Di San Jore was purchased by Watership Down Stud at the Tattersalls December Sale for 575,000gns in 2012.

She has already produced Group 1 winners Jakkalberry ,Crackerjack King and Awlemarduk in addition to Stakes scorer Kidnapping.

Joyful Hope is her latest Stakes performer and based on yesterday’s performance it shouldn’t be long before she gets her head in front in Pattern Company.
