300,000gns Pivotal colt lights up Book 2

THE strong trade for yearlings continued at Tattersalls Book 2 and Watership Down Stud was responsible for consigning one of the top-priced colts of the week.

Lot 520, a mature looking son of Pivotal was bought by John Warren for 300,000gns. This colt was a full-brother to Royal Ascot scorer Moneycantbuymelove from the family of French Guineas winner Landseer and Stakes performer Ikhtyar.

Warren, who purchased the colt on behalf of owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, said: “He was my pick of the day.”

Rabbah Bloodstock went to 100,000gns for lot 1289, an Oasis Dream filly out of Sadler’s Wells mare Quan Yin. She was a grand-daughter of French 1000 Guineas winner East Of The Moon and a great grand-daughter of champion racemare Miesque.

Lot 941, a colt by Smart Strike out of Exciting Times was knocked down to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 90,000gns. This colt is a half-brother to seven winners including Grade 2 winner Gorella and Stakes peformers Porto Santo and Thanks Again.

In total, Watership Down Stud sold 11 lots for an average of 89,000gns.


WDS amongst leading consigners at Tattersalls Book 1

WATERSHIP Down Stud was the third leading consigner at this year’s Tattersalls Book 1 yearling sale, selling 13 lots for 4,502,000gns.

The leading sale was a colt by Dubawi out of Group 1 winner Crystal Music (245), who was purchased by John Ferguson for 1,600,000gns. This colt is a descendant of foundation mare Crystal Spray, who was purchased for the stud back in 1995.

This colt was the third top-priced lot of the week and the top by his stallion, Dubawi, who’s stock averaged a remarkable 654,500gns.

Watership Down Stud offered the only progeny of top stallion War Front at the sale and she (lot 331) was in high demand. John Ferguson again came out on top, spending 950,000gns on this daughter of Grade 1 winner Icon Project.

She was the second top-priced filly of the sale.

Watership Down Stud were also responsible for another of the sale’s top-priced fillies in lot 435, a daughter of Sea The Stars out of Our Queen Of Kings, who was purchased for 600,000gns by Bertrand Le Matyer Bloodstock.

This filly is bred to be a champion as she is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Spinning Queen from the family of Labeeb, Alrassam and Gallipot.

Stock by first-season sire Poet’s Voice were popular and Watership Down were pleased to sell lot 351, a colt by the Darley-based sire for 200,000gns to John Ferguson.

Watership Down Stud is looking forward to offering up 13 yearlings for sale at Tattersalls Book 2 next week. These include progeny by Sea The Stars, Acclamation, Pivotal and Dutch Art.


Exciting draft of yearlings heading to Tattersalls

THE Watership Down and Kiltinan Castle Stud team is looking forward to offering a selection of choicely bred yearlings for sale at Tattersalls over the next couple of weeks.

Fifteen yearlings will be sold at ‘Book 1’, which takes place from October 7- 9. Among them are yearlings by proven champions such as Galileo, Dubawi, New Approach, War Front, Oasis Dream and Invincible Spirit in addition to exciting stock by first season sires Poet’s Voice and Pour Moi.

We are selling two lots by super-sire Galileo. Lot 83, is a colt out of the Listed winning Swiss Lake. The daughter of Indian Ridge has produced six winners from six runners to date including Stakes winners Swiss Diva, Swiss Spirit and Swiss Dream. Lot 417 is also regally bred. He is a colt out of Stakes winner My Branch and is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Tante Rose.

Watership Down Stud are selling the only offspring by top stallion War Front in the sale, lot 331. This filly is out of Grade 1 winner Icon Project who, in turn, is out of Grade 1 winner La Gueriere.

One with a Classic-winning pedigree is lot 245, a colt by Dubawi out of Group 1-winning two-year-old Crystal Music. A daughter of Nureyev, Crystal Music heralds from one of our most successful families at Watership Down Stud and she has already proven herself to be a top-class broodmare.

Lot 335, a son of Oasis Dream out of Sun Chariot Stakes heroine Independence, also takes the eye on paper. This colt, from the family of Derby winner Reference Point, is a half-brother to Eclipse winner and exciting sire Mount Nelson and a full sibling to Group 2 winner and St Leger third Monitor Closely.

We have 13 lots heading to ‘Book 2’ (October 13- 15). These include yearlings by Dutch Art, Pivotal, Sea The Stars and Acclamation with eight of the 13 out of or half-siblings to Stakes performers.

Lot 520 takes the eye as this colt is a full brother to Royal Ascot winner Moneycantbuymelove. The son of Pivotal is closely related to French Guineas hero Landseer and Group 2-placed Ikhtyar.

Sea The Stars, sire of Taghrooda, Sea The Moon and Vazira, will be represented by lot 713. This colt is out Adventure making him a half brother to Group 2 winner Laughing Lashes.

There is strength and depth throughout the entire draft. Our five lots in ‘Book 3’ (October 16) include three that are out of or half-siblings to Stakes winners.

Lot 1312, a colt by Champs Elysees out of Rubies From Burma, is a close relation of promising sire Approve whilst lot 1515 is a Shamardal filly who comes from the family of champion juvenile Damson.

Past graduates from Watership Down’s Tattersalls draft include Sixties Icon, Rewilding, Monitor Closely, Sublimity and Diaghilev amongst other top performers.
